VMware Gets Real About A Post-VM world

The Important

  • Unless there is a compelling reason not to, the high percentage approach to bold transformations, is with bold acquisitions and execution.
  • For VMware that means embracing and leading the containerized world, which is quickly become the goto virtualization / modularization architecture of today’s IT.
  • Today’s acquisition announcements come after other container-centric investments such as Heptio.

Discussion

3-5 few years ago, you might have been excused for thinking that VMware was in a little bit of a strategic muddle. The commoditization of virtual machines was on the horizon, docker was emerging, and VMware was somewhere on the path to realizing that being a cloud provider was not going to fly.

With today’s acquisition announcements: Carbon Black and Pivotal, VMware makes a strong move into the containerized world that is quickly becoming the goto architecture for greenfield development of cloud-native applications and services. ┬áThese acquisitions are a twofer though, also aiding transformation to subscription / SaaS. Too many companies approach radical transformation organically, when they should, as companies like VMware and Cisco do, lean-in heavily on in-organic approaches. While it is often true that to really move the needle, you may one day have to transform your core business, businesses generally need to import talent and new revenue streams, to get the ball rolling, show the way, and provide a transformational catalyst. All the better, when in aggregate, the new revenue streams acquired are bigger than the old revenue streams.

The Carbon Black and Pivotal acquisitions follow other container-related investments including Heptio. VMware is building out a solution set that includes virtualization, containerization, development tools, and security across virtual networks and containers, specifically, a Kubernetes-centric strategy.

VMware is definitely getting real about the post-VM world.
